ESFR SPRINKLERS (EARLY SUPPRESSION FAST RESPONSE)
-
ESFR stands for Early Suppression Fast Response.
Regular sprinklers are designed to wet and cool an area to control the spread of a fire. ESFR Sprinklers are designed to stop the fire as quickly as possible through the "direct and sufficient application of water through the fire plume to the burning fuel surface" (NFPA).
ESFR Sprinklers are designed to produce large and heavy water droplets in a hemispherical pattern underneath the deflector. This results in water being directly applied to the fire, which is intended to penetrate the fire plume and to directly wet the fuel surface.
NFPA 13 has specific requirements for ESPR Sprinklers that involve tighter spacing and K Factor Requirements with larger openings that deliver more water flow.
ESFR Sprinklers are also Fast Response Sprinklers. Fast Response Sprinklers have more sensitive thermal elements that detect temperature changes more quickly than their counterparts.

ESFR Sprinklers are most commonly found in warehouse settings and storage occupancies.
ESFR Sprinklers can often handle high-challenge fires, which can sometimes eliminate the need for In-Rack Storage Systems.
